I came across this Idol a few days ago on a Village Beach. I wondered, What must the maker of this beautiful sculpture think if they see it now, abandoned on a deserted beach?
Sad but true. After ganpati, gauri and then navratri, each year plenty of idols small and big, complete or in pieces found lying on the banks of rivers and also across beaches.
It is so evocative this picture – the extremely fertile looking idol sitting on a barren deserted beach. It is a deeply poetic images that speaks a thousand words…
I love this little written note. Wonder how and why it was left behind. In a country where such statue is honored and cared for it is difficult to think it has been forgotten.
It must have been thrown in the water for some religious reason, and when it waded out to the shore someone picked it up and placed it a little away in sand.
It is so beautiful….it’s so odd just left there?

Yes, it is odd. Don’t know why would someone do that…

Maybe as a blessing to nature or something like a little altar?

In Singapore, we sometimes see Chinese deities left somewhere in the woods. Then devotees worship it. Perhaps it is an altar of sorts?

Are you sure it has been abandonned, and not placed there on purpose?

I love the juxtaposition between the sacred and the profane that is presented here
